New Vintage

Food is an incredibly important part of my life. I am a (novice) gardener, an (earnest) home cook and an (avid) admirer of all things made from scratch. The process by which plants go from tiny seed to field to table (to belly) is pretty amazing.

And so, I really wanted to impart all those things into my new images of fresh fruits. I was going for a lush, yet homemade feel to these images... Simplicity meets style.

Willamette Valley

Beautiful Oregon wine country in the fall... Found some grapes still clinging to the vine. Such a lovely day!

Show your bones

First off, I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and their album "Show Your Bones". You all should run right out and listen to it if you have not yet done so.

I also have a fascination with actual bones and animal skins and such and am always looking for a way to photographically capture the beauty and intensity of these objects in a compelling way. Here are two recent experiments using the same skull as the central object.

New Studio Work

Playing around with some new ideas and stylistic devices... I've been working with different ways to get an old-timey, sort of antiqued look that isn't blatantly Photo-chopped. Here is one of the more successful attempts...

Cool tones/ Warm tones

Two versions: one image that goes toward the cooler end of the light spectrum and another image that is warmer... I love color casts and using them to enhance the mood of an image.

Kung Fu Fight!

Following along in the action and movement vein, I've got some cool shots of the Portland Shao-lin Center...

Sorry for the long delay in posts-- I've been distracted by the gorgeous Portland summer... I can guarantee that I will more than make up for it when our 9 months or so of rain arrive in the near future....

ze film noir

It's fun to comb through the old photo archives from time to time and look at older work with fresh eyes. I found this photo of the lovely Sarah Head today... I love the film noir kind of thing that's going on.

Sideshow

So here are some images from an ongoing sideshow-themed project of mine... I seem to constantly be coming up with grand personal project ideas, though I don't have the grand amounts of time to work on them... Bearded Lady, Knife-thrower, Tattooed Man pictured here.

Subjects with Infinite Patience

I really like these images of fresh produce from the market... the rich colors and subdued light. But it just doesn't fit into any of my current portfolios. I am mostly a photographer of people, but the more interested I become in cooking and growing food, the more I am drawn to the natural beauty of fruit and vegetables. An added bonus is that working with inanimate objects gives me a chance to really experiment with light and color-- I can take my time and they will for the most part remain unchanged. Stay tuned as I continue to build this portfolio...
